Travel Guide: Copenhagen

It shouldn’t much to convince you to visit Copenhagen- the capital of the happiest country in the world, Denmark.

When to Visit:

Due to its location in Scandinavia and northern Europe, Copenhagen does get a bit cold and grey in the winter months. However, winter is still one of the most popular times to visit Copenhagen, due to its Christmas Markets. The best time to visit Copenhagen is during the summer, when the weather is warm and the days are the longest. If you do visit during the winter, be prepared for shorter and darker days.

Things to know:

• Currency in Copenhagen is the Danish Krone (DKK).

• Copenhagen is located in the Denmark, Scandanavia.

• Copenhagen can be an expensive destination to visit in Europe.

• Because of its location, the hours of sunlight varies significantly throughout the year. June sees 17 hours of daylight whereas December has 7 hours of daylight. The sun usually sets anywhere between 3:30pm and 6:15pm in the winter.
• Copenhagen City Center, Nyhavn, or Kobenhaven K are some of the most popular tourist neighborhoods.
• The best way to get around Copenhagen is by public transportation (metro, bus, ferry, etc), by bike, or by foot.

• Most of the highlights and major sites of this city are located in close proximity and are within walking distance of accommodations in the neighborhoods that are listed above. While we were in Copenhagen, I walked to a majority of the sites.

• Since biking is the major mode of transportation for those that live there, the streets tend to be biker friendly. However, be sure you are aware of all the rules of the roads before you decide to bike.

What to do:

Nyhavn:

Nyhavn, once an old port, is now one of the most recognizable areas of Copenhagen. Nyhavn is a popular destination to eat, grab a drink, and view all the colorful buildings that surround the port. During the winter, Nyhavn is where the Copenhagen’s Christmas market is located.

The Little Mermaid:

Hans Christen Andersen is one of the Copenhagen’s most famous writers. The Little Mermaid, a gift from Carl Jacobsen in 1913, was inspired by the stories of Hans Christen Andersen. Today, this statue, located in Langelinie and a popular place to visit when in Copenhagen.

Rosenborg Castle:

Rosenborg Castle was built in the 17th century by King Christian IV and is located in King’s Gardens. The Castle is home to beautiful artwork, incredible royal jewels, and intricate architecture.

Amalienborg Castle:

Amalienborg Castle is the current residence of Copenhagen’s royal family.

Christiansborg Castle:

Christiansborg Castle is historically known as the city’s center of power. It is currently where the Danish Parliament, Prime Minister, and Supreme Court sit.

Tivoli Gardens:

Trivoli Gardens is an amusement park located in Copenhagen.

Christmas Markets:

Copenhagen has some of the best Christmas Markets. The Christmas Markets are usually open from the start of November until just before Christmas.

Stroget

Stroget is a pedestrian-only shopping area located the heart of Copenhagen and is one of the oldest and largest pedestrian streets in Europe. In it home to countless number of boutiques, luxury and high-end brand name stores as well as cafes and restaurants.
