If you are looking for a swoon-worthy and picture-perfect destination to add to your latest Italy itinerary, Santa Margherita Lingure and Portofino are two destinations that should not be missed! Santa Margherita Lingure/Portofino are located close to Genoa and Milan. The scenery in these idyllic destinations are some of the most beautiful in all of Italy.
When to Go:
When it comes to Europe, the most popular time to visit is summer months when you are usually guaranteed sunny weather and warm temperatures. However, due to the popularity especially after the last few years of minimal travel, high season in Europe means higher prices, a and more crowds. As someone who has lived in Europe for the last year, I would recommend the best time of year to visit these destinations as mid-September to mid-October. May is another good month to visit, but sometimes weather can be a bit questionable with higher chances of rain and cooler temperatures. However, if you visit in September, the crowds have slowed down a bit as families are back in school, the temperatures are still ideal, and the water is still warm enough for a dip.
What to Do:
There is so much to do in Santa Margherita and Portofino throughout your visit. Here are some suggestions when you are in the area:
- Relax by the pool or by the Mediterrean Sea and soak up all the incredible views.
- Explore Portofino, a quaint and charming, seaside town, located about 10 minutes by car from Santa Margherita Lingure. In Portofino, you will find yachts, boutiques, plenty of restaurants, and idyllic scenery.
- Walk from Santa Margherita Lingure to Portofino or vice versa. The walk is about three miles and takes roughly one hour. If you prefer not to walk, you could also take a bus or taxi. At the time of our trip (May 2022), the bus is three euros per person per direction and the taxi is about 55 euros (at the time of our travel).
- Spend the day in Cinque Terre. Cinque Terre (known as the five towns) is a region in Italy known for its hiking, quaint towns, and beachfront location. Some opt to visit Cinque Terre for a day trip, but others choose to spend a few days in the area.
- Spend the day in Santa Margherita Lingure. It is a beautiful place to spend the day and explore its restaurants, charming beach clubs, and boutique shops.
- Take a boat. If you visit during the summertime, exploring the coastline from the water is another fantastic option on how to spend your time in Santa Margherita Lingure.
- Eat Pesto and Focaccia: This particular region of Italy is known for Pesto and Focaccia. It only makes sense to try one or both of these delicacies when in the region.
Overall, Santa Margherita Lingure is stunning and definitely one of my favorite areas of Italy. It exceeded all expectations and definitely a place I hope to visit more than once!
