Europe is magical in the wintertime, especially Vienna, Austria. Austria in the winter is known for its snowy weather, incredible Christmas markets, and quaint snow-capped towns. Vienna is famous for a number of reasons: its the birthplace of Beethoven and Mozart, it is the historical center of Austrian royalty, and it has plenty of famous cuisine such as schnitzel.
When to go:
The most popular time to go to Vienna is either Summer (June-August) or Christmas/holiday season. During the summer months when the weather is warm and the skies are sunny, hotel rooms are usually more expensive and it will be more crowded. Vienna is also more crowded during Christmas as Vienna has some of the most famous Christmas markets in all of Europe. If you want to avoid some of the crowds, April- May and September- October are great options to visit Vienna.
What to do in Vienna:
Anker Clock:
The clock was built between 1911 and 1914 and is located in Hoher Markt (High Market).
Christmas Markets:
The Viennese take their Christmas markets VERY seriously. The first Christmas market in Vienna started in 1298 and, currently, there are over 20 markets scattered throughout the city.
The most famous Christmas market is the Vienna’s City Hall Christmas market. There are over 120 stalls, an ice skating rink, delicious food, and authentic, handmade holiday gifts.
Palaces:
Vienna used to be the center of the royal Austrian Empire. There are many palaces located throughout the city, and some of the most famous ones are:
- Schonbrunn Palace
- Belvedere Palace
- Imperial Palace
- Hofburg Palace
- Burgtheater Vienna- the national theater in Vienna
- Stephanplatz and Saint Stephen Cathedral: St. Stephen Cathedral, the Roman Catholic Church, is one of the most popular tourist sites in Vienna. The Cathedral is known for its towers and is one of the city symbols of Vienna.
