Lucerne is a quaint town located between the beautiful Swiss Alps and Lake Lucerne. Due to its proximity to Zurich, it is a popular destination to visit while in Zurich and Switzerland.
Things to know:
- Switzerland is an expensive destination. It is often ranked as the country with the highest cost of living in the world.
- The currency in Switzerland is the Swiss Franc.
- The best way to get around Switzerland is by train or car. The trains were pretty easy to navigate throughout the country.
- Lucerne is located about hour from Zurich Airport by train.
When to go:
- Switzerland is a popular year-round destination. In the winter, Switzerland has incredible skiing and some of the best mountainside resorts in the world. Could you just imagine spending the winter skiing in Zermatt or St Moritz? In the summer, Switzerland offers a wide range of amazing outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, luging, and so much more. There is something to offer in every season.
- If you are looking to visit Switzerland to save money and avoid crowds, I would recommend visiting in late April- beginning of June and September – November. We visited in mid-June, and while it was crowded, it didn’t feel overwhelming as it can when visiting some European cities in the Summer.
Things to do:
- Lucerne is a easy, walkable town to explore for a couple of hours. There are a ton of restaurants, shops, and sites such as the Chapel Bridge to visit while spending the day here.
- Chapel Bridge, originally built in 1333, is one of the oldest covered bridges in Europe. Chapel Bridge is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Lucerne. A unique characteristic of Chapel Bridge is the artwork scattered throughout the ceiling of the bridge.
- Take the Steepest Cogwheel Ride in the World: Whether it is skiing the Swiss Alps or luging down a mountain or hiking, Switzerland tends to attracts those that are active and adventurous. One popular activity is to take the the steepest cogwheel ride in the world to Mount Pilatus.
- Visit Pilatus Rope Park: There is a luge and a rope park located on the top of Mount Pilatus
- Take a lake cruise around Lake Lucerne: There are a variety of lake cruises that depart from Lucerne. It is always a unique vantage point to see the town from the lake.
- Swiss Museum of Transport: One of the most popular museums in the area. The Swiss Museum of Transport is an interactive museum that shows different types of transportation.
- Lion Monument: The monument was resurrected to honor the Swiss guards who were lost during the French Revolution.
